worst rails host ever
Reviewer: bill, 11 December 2008
Guess what happens if your app starts taking a lot of RAM? They'll just put a ceiling and start using swap if need be, right? No, they'll automatically stop your Rails instance, no one will be able to access it, and you'll have to reactivate it manually. But wouldn't that make it ridiculously easy to take down a Rails site hosted by them? Yes, yes it would.

And, on the gs their server runs a single Mongrel. This implies that multiple requests will get queued and your traffic will crawl, at best.

Avoid

I agree with the other reviews here. I host 4 sites on their dvs with them and 11 rails apps on their grid servers at the moment.

Their support is terrible for the most part. Every once and a while you luck out and someone good gets your 'ticket' buts its rare.

The dv option is foolish, like others say, go with slidehost. End of story. You can give up any support as soon as you install Rails.

If you ask for help you get the standard 'We don't support 3rd party blah blah' - if a client asks for help they get the standard thing too, so they start hitting you up... so just go with Slicehost if you need that much.

The gs option I still did because I could hand off client support for webmail, ftp ,etc. However, they used to include a 64mb rails container for free in the $20/mo option - however they stopped that September 1st 2008 - so now its effectively $40/mo for rails hosting there. For that much - there are a lot of better options.

The 'grid' thing never seemed to be anything that was a bonus, it mostly causes problems. I gave up using pingdom to monitor gs hosts, there seemed to always be one down - just slow connections here and there that you could never explain because it would be 'all good' 20 seconds later. Sometimes ssh would close down completely - like 'connection refused' errors, I would try to contact support, but by the time they got back to me with 'what password are you using' (wtf) it was working again - hours later.

You get the idea.

They are sooo shitty
Reviewer: David, 26 July 2008
Overpriced. Slow. Terrible. I suffered through using them for way to long then i switched to the bliss of my own vps. 3x the dedicated ram for a third the price, do yourself a favor and ignore these fools and switch to SLICEHOST. they are the single best host i ever used in 5 years. 9 months and not a single issue.

Terrible support
Reviewer: Trevor, 27 July 2007
I signed up for the media temples grid server package.

Media Temple has a good knowledge base article for installing rails and getting it up and running.

However, their support is terrible, they provide you zero support for rails applications.

Decent - use them if you have to
Reviewer: Danger, 19 March 2007
They provide you with a base install of CentOS. It's not too tricky to get Rails up and running thanks to their handy knowledge base articles, but that's about as far as you can go.

They don't have any package manager installed by default and you can't compile any new packages without having the support staff install things like gcc and make for you.

Go with slicehost if you can, but if you don't mind paying a little more and getting a little less MT will do.
